Description

The Albany Damien Center 2022 Hero Award will be presented at an event featuring hors d'oeuvres, music, and (an online) silent auction at The Century House in Latham, NY on Thursday, September 22nd from 6 to 9 PM.  For our 3rd annual event, The Albany Damien Center is excited to announce the selection of Benita Zahn, Ph.D. as our 2022 Hero Award recipient. Past Hero awardees include T. Norman Rea (2019) and Ken Screven (2020).

Throughout the past four decades, Benita’s continued focus on HIV and AIDS-related issues has been integral to keeping this public health pandemic at the forefront, greatly contributing to our efforts to End the AIDS Epidemic in NYS. Benita’s tenure as a news anchor and reporter coincides with the first reported case of AIDS 40 years ago on June 5, 1981, when the first five cases of what later became known as AIDS were officially reported. In addition, Benita has donated her considerable talents to perform at special events that were instrumental in raising much-needed funds to help the Albany Damien Center.

During her illustrious career, Benita conveyed her signature style, enthusiasm, and passion in every story she covered, engaging and connecting with viewers as a trusted source of news and information. Her personable nature and innate ability to form relationships with people both on and off the air quickly gave rise to her local celebrity status and made her a household name during the nightly newscasts.

While new HIV therapies are helping people live longer, HIV stigma, poverty, trauma, and isolation combined now with the devastating impact of Covid-19, cause too many people to go without life-saving treatment and support, which make the Damien Center services more critical than ever before. All donations support the programs and services at the Albany Damien Center.
